Ku Klux
Kumbia!
Trece Lunas Arts Collective
will present the play Ku Klux Kumbia!, a carnivalesque political
satire that tells the story of an undocumented immigrant, Basilio,
who makes a pact with the Devil in order to resurrect his girlfriend
and is transported into a deliriously Orwellian future as a servant
and sexual object in the home of an “all-American” family.
In order to get his soul back, Basilio must make sense of the absurd
world around him and ultimately trick the Devil at his own game.
Long-dead revolutionaries, erotic shamans, nuclear scientists, the
ghosts of Klansmen, secret government agents, and gambling housewives
are just a few of the characters that appear as the plot unfolds,
exploring issues of racism, gender, globalization, military imperialism
and the experiences of Latino immigrants in the United States.
Combining the rollickingly
humorous theatrical language of comedia dell’arte, a multicultural
cast of six actors and four musicians, Ku Klux Kumbia! is a ritual
of disgust with the violence of war and imperialism, as well as
a joyous celebration of the lives and struggles of oppressed peoples.
